I just read that a remake of Papillon is about to be filmed in the Canary Islands, starring Robert Downey Jr and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
After the Thomas Crown Affair, this will be the second McQueen movie of which there will be a remake.
It shows the man was, and still is, pure class.
It also shows Hollywood is lacking imagination these days.

are you an idiot? thats an insult to Steve McQueen to have brat pitt or Jason statham to play that role no way do they have the acting talent! actually dont bother doing a remake it's never going to be any timy bit better!

oh and Robert Downey Jr will be playing the part of papillon, dont you Hoffman will be playing Hoffman thaeres a bit of a clue there in the name!?
pitt and statham ... ( 2 months ago by signboyy)
pitt and statham can play the silent relentless determination that mcqueen played. i would prefer statham because his persona and looks most resemble mcqueen's. but pitt is pretty close and his marquee name can make this film mainstream so that many people can be exposed to this story.(look what he did for guy richie's snatch) its an important story and needs to reach lots of people.

philip seymour playing dustin's part? wtf? their personas' and looks are completely different. robert downey jr. in mcqueen's role? wtf? again personas and looks are completely different. you know that this is? this is hollywood playing that stupid game of switching casting just to be different. so you have toughguys playing wimps and wimps playing toughguys. why does hollywood play these stupid reverse-casting games? it makes the characters unbelievable and ruins the movies.

well the politically correct brigade can call me a fucking racist all they like, nothing could be further from the truth.... just be grateful it's a white guy in the lead role playing a guy who was white in real life. HOLLYWOOD SUCKS. IT'S BORING AND CONDASCENDING.

I understand that you regard Hollywood as boring and condescending, but regrettably your reasons are not at all clear to me. Please explaing your views in more detail: What is wrong (or right) with white people in this film?

Trust me. The last movies i went to see were in 2005. They were "Downfall", a German movie (as you know), and "War of the Worlds".
I've noticed movies are increasingly contrived, dull, overblown and with too much emphasis on CGI at the expense of a believable or entertaining script. They are forever reminding us black people exist to the extent they seem to be lecturing the converted. Political correction breeds racism. If you neglect to include ethnic minorities, you risk the "racist!" slur.
Thanks for the ... ( 2 weeks ago by phyrad)
Thanks for the explanation, I now get your point and agree that exaggerated political correctness is nonsense. Still I wouldn't say that it "breeds racism". In addition I'm surprised that you think of such problems with regard to a 25 year old film that is undoubtedly good. But anyway, I guess we agree on the important points.
