Bullitt is a 1968 thriller film starring Steve McQueen. It was distributed by Warner Bros. The director was Peter Yates. The story was adapted for the screen by Alan Trustman and Harry Kleiner, based on the novel titled Mute Witness (1963) by Robert L. Fish (aka Robert L. Pike). Lalo Schifrin wro
te the original music score, a memorable mix of jazz, brass and percussion. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing (Frank P. Keller) and was nominated for Best Sound. Writers Trustman and Kleiner won a 1969 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Motion Picture Scree
nplay. Bullitt is most-remembered for its central car chase scene through the streets of downtown San Francisco, one of the earliest and most influential car chase sequences in movie history.[1] The scene had Bullitt in a dark "Highland Green" 1968 Ford Mustang G.T.390 Fastback, chasing two hit-men
in a "Tuxedo Black" 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum. (In honor of the Mustang in the film, the Ford Motor Company produced a limited edition 2001 Ford Mustang GT "Bullitt Mustang," which took styling cues from the '68 movie car and even mimicked its exhaust note).

what would really win in a high speed chase, the 1968 mustange G.T. 380 fastback or the 1968 dodge charger r/t 440 magnum?
Driver of the ... ( 1 week ago by moejr1974)
Driver of the Charger drove the big black Pontiac Grandville in the 7 ups and also was the driver for Gene Hackman's character in the french connection. Not sure which would win in a top speed chase as you have more factors like aerodynamics, gearing and weight. I would still pick the charger but not sure how close it would be.

Perhaps Charger would win, but Mustang '68 is one of the most beautiful cars ever, so I'd prefer it even if it was slower.

better match would be mustang vs barracuda or challenger.Charger had to be 4,600 lbs. They were all great cars from that era.

McQueen's Mustang was a 390 GT, believe me it's fast as balls, I have a 68 390 Fastback myself, & it scares me at times. McQueen's 390 wasn't stock either........

I laugh at anyone who says this scene was sped up, it was one of the few car chase scenes of its time to be put on film at normal speed. This is what started the whole "car chase" shebang. Anyone who says this movie was garbage has a terrible taste in films.

Bullit is great, but you're right. Gone in 60 Seconds the 1974 version was spectacular. I was 10 when I saw that in the theatre. Too cool. By the way the scene when he takes out the light pole actually happen for real. They just roled a camera and let him drive on a real freeway.
