I think Laura was good but my money is on Essra Mohawk whom I assume you know of if you are a NYer. She wrote "Change of Heart" for Cyndi Lauper & Frank Zappa put her in his band at age 19. Essra also sang 3 songs on Schoolhouse Rock. You should check out Essra's "Primordial Lovers" from Reprise in 1970- which Rolling Stone called "one of the top 25 albums of all time." It's a classic, like Essra.

The song was performed, by Nyro, on NBC's Kraft Music Hall Presents the Sound of the Sixties (Wednesday, January 15, 1969). Yes, in primetime. Laura Nyro in "Save the Country" on her third album, 1969's New York Tendaberry. The Fifth Dimension, who had success covering many Nyro songs, took the single to number 27 on the US top forty pop charts. (Nyro's songs provided the group with five of their twenty Top Forty hits.) She was 21 in this video.
