Why do so many Muslims hate the United States? What has America done to alienate so many people in the Muslim world? These are the questions that former Pakistani cricketer turned politician, Imran Khan, tries to answer in this latest offering of the Unreported World series.
At Islamabad's Women's College, a concert for peace is taking Place. The students are mainly from privileged, middle-class backgrounds. If you were looking for Muslims that sympathised with the West, this would be the first Place you would go. But even here, amongst the more liberal, "Westernised"
Pakistanis, anti-American feeling is riding high. "It's as if one white life was far more important than thousands of black or brown lives," comments one young, educated, middle-class woman. "They feel they can basically come in, use as they please, and then, when they want, they can just walk acr
oss the border, go somewhere else, and do exactly as they please there," complains another. The underlying feeling here is clearly that the US only cares or acts when its own people are at risk. If these liberal, cosmopolitan women feel this way about America, how must those who do not benefit from
the Western way of life feel?

Unfortunately syrrus21, your self description is rather amazing consider the fact that you first say I'm Pakistani and then stress that you live in Islamabad yet your profile states otherwise. Maybe you and I are reading different Qu'ran (which i highly dough, considering tht their is only one version of the Quran). But unless I'm missing some thing, and this is the Irony, the Surah you refer to does not even for once use the Term Jihad let alone explain what it is. Get your facts right!

- With justice comes peace & not the other way around. What people in the east want is justice and equality & most of all to be left alone. American presence in the East did not start on Septemer the 11th, rather the presence of Allied forces has been seen for decades and often the cost of this presence for the people is paid for by their blood. To a dead person, it wouldn't matter if the bullet tht killed him was from Al-Qaida or the Allied forces. & for christ sake dont blame Islam!

I apologize for stating that I currently live in Islamabad. I grew up there for pretty much all my life. I currently study in the US. As for your comment on jihad...you are right. It isn't mentioned in sura 9...However, it clarifies (i.e. 9:29) what is acceptable for someone who performs jihad (striving in the way of Allah) as defined in sura 2:216-218.

I don't wholly disagree with you with respect to American involvement. However, the point I was trying to make was that militant ideology is not a unique, distorted position put forth by fundamentalists. Fighting against unbelievers (kufrs) is acceptable (perhaps imposed) by the qur'an.

When Bush wanted to send troops into Iraq, there was a need for creating dossiers of evidence. By contrast, the war in Pakistan has been engineered without the need for such frivolity. Its an act of war when the US decides to use reconnaissance drones over Pakistan's borders, or send in Special Ops forces to destroy a town. These actions have been taking place with impunity without the need for a fancy UN resolution. Obama is using "Terror" as a basis for destroying another Muslim country.

Anyway, my point was that there are good reasons if Americans are so alone in the world with their faith in America being committed to freedom, world peace, human rights etc.

Didnt Iraq attack Iran and Kuwait?? Didnt Saddam make the decision to use the gas?? Isnt the onus of murder on the murderer or is it somehow the gun shoots itself or the knife got up and stabbed someone??? Now Saddam bought Russian military gear, didnt he?? Check it up and you might see the Russians overthrew the secular govt. and occupied Afghanistan. It is not important that Iraq had WMD but it was important that America was babysitting Iraq and that the sanctions they imposed were making other nations rich when they had to do the hard work. So invasion ended up the only option to alleviate the mess that was Iraq. America knew Iraq needed investment and they were prepared to oversee such an investment but not with Saddam in power.

Democracies in many muslim nations would be laughable but Iraq has had a secular system for a while and they may be ready. America was always fighting the bigger war where there were inconsistencies within a pond but in the ocean it made sense. Yes there were mistakes as in such a large theatre of war as the globe but overall I think they have had a good record of winning global wars.
