Hmmm...unfortunately I do not think there is a way to monitor yourself, besides the level meter in Audacity, without connecting some type of external mixer. I could be wrong, so someone else please chime in if you have an answer. Will

Actually, I figured out that Audacity (at least with my sound card) doesn't permit direct monitoring unless you have an external sound card - which I happen to have, and once I hooked it up, it worked great.

Good info. I'm glad it worked out for you. I wonder if the external sound card, in your case, is working like an external mixer would. Interesting. Thanks!

I usually upload instrumentals that I make with fruity loops, than I sing over top of it.
But my voice always sound muffled. I listen to my mix, than listen to a Jay-z CD and the mix is way better than mine. Why?

Jay-Z has a multi-million dollar studio. You have Fruity Loops. :-) You can increase the quality of your recordings by buying a better microphone and input into your computer (mixer and/or higher end soundcard). Don't go overboard or into debt to get that better sound though. Work your way up to it as your budget affords. Hope that helps. --Will

It's easy. You use the slider (double-arrow) tool. It's next to the magnifying glass on the upper-left. Click that button and your cursor turns into a double-arrow. You're now able to slide a track to the left or right to line it up with music, start a song after your words, etc. Let me know if that helps or if you need anything else. Will
There are a couple ... ( 5 months ago by CloudyDayArt)
There are a couple of ways to do that. 1) With the selection tool , click on the track at the point you want to split off. Go to "Edit --> Split" This will split the track at that point. Now you can choose the "time shift" aka slider tool I mentioned before and move it along the time-line. 2) Using the selection tool, highlight the part you want to move. Then go to "Edit -> Cut" to copy to clipboard. Then "Tracks -> Add New". Paste the track into the new track and slide as needed.
