well, personally I believe that there is a higher plane. That's my spiritual belief though, and hasn't got any falsifiable evidence.
On the earthly plane, pretty much everything indeed has a counterpart. True LOVE and JOY I think don't, but that's where in my belief system that "higher plane" comes in. Hate is not the counterpart of true love, and sorrow doesn't cut it as the opposite of joy. I am open to discussion, though! :
