Ricky Nelson Rockabilly - 3 songs featuring James Burton

Uploaded by: Gatorrock786
Video Description:
No one can deny the impact Teen Idol Ricky Nelson had on Rock 'n' Roll. From his musical appearances on "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet", he helped introduce Rock (and Rockabilly) to the American public. And while Elvis Presley might have been perceived as a bit dangerous... Ricky Nelson was safe for our teenage girls. He also had an amazing back-up band:
James Burton, James Kirkland, Ritchie Frost, and Ray Johnson. (Many formerly had worked with Bob Luman) My favorite part is probably the last 20 seconds of the 3rd song. The recording engineer brought up some cool-sounding hand-claps in reverb. Great touch! Be sure to watch all of my Ricky Nelson videos. Ricky had looks & talent and with James Burton excellent choice of sidemen. Yet during those "teen idol" times, the commercialism was obvious. He was like a version of Elvis that parents & clergy felt comfortable with. Amusing that he announced James Burton's lead by saying "guitarist"...Real intimate rapport going between the guys. Oh yeah, Ricky was the star, nevermind who was the better musician.

I would argue that any singer in any band gets more attention than the other musicians... no matter who might be more talented. And since this is Ricky's TV show, of course the emphasis is going to be on him. The 'guitarist' call-out (probably more like 'Hey Guitar') is a very common exclamation in rockabilly or blues... not a sign the two don't have a good relationship. They did.

I've seen Burton siding for Elvis Presley and he was called out as "James" by El. But it's good to know that Ricky & James did get along - Of course James ended up playing for Elvis, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, John Denver and many other legendary performers while Ricky kind of got frozen in time as a creative entity.

Ricky was the guy who softened rock and roll, made it tolerable when Elvis couldn't....and opened up rock and roll, really, for the kids to sell to their parents....an the rest is history...as a ricky myself, I was crushed when he died. America is in a world of trouble now...we need The Greatest Generation back...

That is an interesting take on rock n roll, in general. I tend to agree with your theory. Elvis can thank him, now.

"Better musician"? Who are you to judge? As a guy who spent more than a little time in front of a band both with and without a stringed instrument in my hands, I can tell you that it's nearly impossible to do both at once at your highest level. Very often, lead guitar and bass parts are playing a counter-rythym to the vocal line. The rythym guitar part most frequently follows the vocal rythym, which is why you see so many lead singers playing rythym guitar.

Kenwood3865...are you sure?
Do your homework, for starters the first R.I.A.A. gold award was for Elvis's Hard Headed Woman which means either parents were already buying Elvis or giving the kids the money to do so because they didn't mind.
Ricky Nelson couldn't hold a candle to Elvis, not even then

You can't change documented historical facts and dates....Ricky Nelson was the one early rock n roller who made rock and roll more accessible to mainstream 50's kids, whose parents disliked the "lurchy", carnal Elvis....buy it.....you'll sleep better:-)

aclem2004...Thanks for replying James Burton is one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
About 5 years ago I worked with John Daulton who has been with the Kinks since 66{If you watch the video of Lola he is the one with the beard on Bass}and he said they toured the States in the early 70s and they went to an Elvis concert but he went just to say he had seen James Burton and he was fantastic because he would often do a solo.
