beat: I'm not ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
beat: I'm not religious and won't tolerate the small minority of extremists who work to blur the lines of separation between church and state.
However, IMO people with modest religious faith are better citizens (on average) than those without faith. I find them to be more tolerant and compassionate than those who are contemptuous of religion. I've found the most hateful, and potentially violent people are secular radicals on the Left. P
olitical ideology serves as their "religion".
No, this is ... ( 2 weeks ago by FromBoomTown)
No, this is completely off; I never said atheism prevents tyranny. Religion promotes tyranny because it--like dictatorships--utilizes leader worship and mind-control. It is not rooted in reality; it tries to substitute itself as science. Democracy did exist in Greece and in other parts of Europe prior to 1700 though not continuous. Can you say that secular nations have fared worse than religious ones when the United STates and most of Europe prospser?
The right has the ... ( 2 weeks ago by FromBoomTown)
The right has the crazy neoconservatives; and Palin, what is up with that? And they keep bringing up God. Do you believe in Jesus? And those faith-based initiatives. There are millions of evangelicals in the U.S. and about 80% of them vote republican; still a sizeable majority catering to the republicans.
It's a good thing ... ( 2 weeks ago by FromBoomTown)
It's a good thing you brought up the USSR and China; they hated religion, not because it was a good thing, but because it did all too well what they wanted it to do for them. Religion is a great tool for mind-control and assimilation. Hitler used it well. And so did almost all of the dictators of history--they called themselves divinely ordained.
Are you suggesting ... ( 2 weeks ago by FromBoomTown)
Are you suggesting that religion is good? Can it take the high ground. Why has religion committed atrocities? Why has it denied science? It meshed its powers with politics and ensnared it's followers into an atmosphere of torture and torment. All dictatorships are religions.
from: I don't think ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
from: I don't think we're too far apart here. I'm opposed to religion influencing politics; religion should be private and completely separate from govt. So, I consider most muslim countries to be a disaster precisely because religion is paramount.
My objection is the Left's hatefulness and ridicule of EVERYTHING related to religion. I don't think I've ever met a religious person who believes in literal interpretations of scripture to the point where they reject science and logic.
from: Ask yourself ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
from: Ask yourself this: after 8 years of Bush (arguably the most "christian" Pres we've ever had) and Rep control of congress, just exactly what has changed? Do we now have prayer in school? Is abortion illegal? Is homosexuality illegal?
No, nothing has changed. The religious fringe has made ZERO progress in the courts or legislatively. And the reason is because Rep pols don't believe in it. They trot out the red meat at election time and then do nothing once in office. No threat at all
from: I'll say it ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
from: I'll say it once again. Religion in the govt/political sphere is bad. Religious faith among the populace is (all things considered) preferable to a populace without religious faith.
The threat from the religious lunatic fringe has been greatly exaggerated. The Left uses it to fear-monger...to scare the shit out of their Base and to generate campaign contributions and to turn out the vote. But I'm glad you agree that dictatorships have religious trappings; like our radical Le
ft.
from: I know a lot ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
from: I know a lot about the 3rd Reich, and Hitler was anti-religion and used it only to the extent that all european leaders (of the time) used it. Generic references to god in speeches, etc. Hitler was repeatedly quoted as saying he would "settle scores" with the church after the war.
Re the communists, I don't understand your points. A fundamental tenet of marxism is denial of god, therefore in USSR/China religion was banned. The marxists set the State up as god; it was a secular religion.
What has changed? ... ( 2 weeks ago by FromBoomTown)
What has changed? How about our foreign policy? Homosexuality isn't illegal; but same-sex marriage is illegal. Roe vs. Wade is being fought; and, the president repeatedly states that states ought to teach intelligent design in schools. The right keeps bringing up Christian America; that's probably why it alienated so many people during the elections. You have to be Christian to be considered by the right.
Yes; that is what I ... ( 2 weeks ago by FromBoomTown)
Yes; that is what I said; the USSR/China religion was worship of the state. Marxism always leads to dictatorships. And religion is fundamentally flawed in allowing this. Religion is a dictatorship. It controls every part of a believers life, complete with reprisals and false promises. It tells people what to think by appealing to their biases. How can any voter keep religious dogma out of his/her decision-making?
from: No, same sex ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
from: No, same sex marriage is NOT illegal, and far Right efforts to get an ammendment banning it have utterly failed.
You keep missing my point. The Reps "TALK" about these hot-button issues all the time; they want to get voter turnout from the Base and to get campaign donations. But...once in office, they do virtually nothing. Bush is the perfect example. Your post proves my point; you can't come up with any c
oncrete examples of where Rep pols have crossed the church/state boundries.
free: Again, we're ... ( 2 weeks ago by JohnR22926)
free: Again, we're saying the same thing here. I've never advocated a State religion, much less having religious figures with political power.
You seem to keep compaining about something that doesn't exist. You keep implying that the religious Right has political power and/or is about to take control and establish a dictatorship. The religious Right has NO political power and never will. It's a fear tactic by the Dems to get people like
you cranked up.
Do you know what ... ( 1 week ago by FromBoomTown)
Do you know what DOMA is? Do you know what Prop 8 is? 29 states currently bar same-sex marriage. You're completely off; voters vote for those who are sane, not those who profess one thing and do another. If everyone voted this way, then the value of honesty would disappear.
from: Once again, ... ( 1 week ago by JohnR22926)
from: Once again, you've proven my point. Propositions are done by the States...not the federal government.
My point was that there has been no legislation at the national level (by the Pres or congress) to ban gay anything. It's a hot-button issue the Reps use to get the Base energized...and then once in power they do nothing but talk. Also IMO, many of the state props are primarily a gut reaction to
radical initiatives of the Left. The Left's rhetoric is hateful and they go too far.
No, your point is ... ( 1 week ago by FromBoomTown)
No, your point is that the far right doesn't do what it says it wants to do. And it does, state or otherwise. Here is DOMA for you: 1. No state (or other political subdivision within the United States) need treat a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage, even if the relationship is considered a marriage in another state. 2. The Federal Government may not treat same-sex relationships as marriages for any purpose, even if concluded or recognized by one of the states.

I don't know how you can say anything at all considering the republicans lied to get a war started and then mismanaged it.

"Marxism always leads to dictatorships."
I'll admit that the only alternative to capitalism is a dictatorship. However, Marx was against social tyranny (like dictatorships). As a matter of fact, the communism of Marx resembles Earth, as depicted in Star Trek in many ways...
What part of ... ( 5 days ago by biancademonet)
What part of separation of Church and State do you fail to understand. DOMA and its clones violate the 1st, 5th, and 14th amendments to the Constitution. They are UNCONSTITUTIONAl. Hate based on Religeon is still HATE AND THEREFORE IS UNAMERICAN!!

You have it ... ( 3 days ago by BeatBuddy)
You have it backward. The radical left in America is too weak to have that kind of impact. In fact, the USA is the only western nation without a major socialist party. Indeed, what made communism so oppressive is because it had the same trappings as religion, and was treated as if it were a religion. Just flip the channels and you'll see how much influence and power the religious right has.
