I actually believe this song has multiple meanings (apart from the obvious), it can mean different things to different people, if you listen between the lines. Even though, the overall tone of the song is sad (sad in a good way, with meaning, if you know what I mean), I believe there are brief inscions of happiness (not the lyrics, but pay attention to the beat of the music).
