you just refer to the metronome's beats as 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3, and it gives that "swing" feel.

Swing musician's (like the ones in Basie's and Duke's band) did it all the time! For me, the metronome is doing "half-time", which is what it is for Pat also! It's "ah,ba,da,ba-ah,ba,da,ba", the whole way thru.

I completely disagree. You can play a straight, maybe bossa type feel with the metro on beats 2 and 4 no problem. The only thing that makes the music swing is what you play.

Uh... How about the changes to All the Things You Are? Among the msot common jazz standards of all time? He's improvising solo to demonstrate how you can make a click or drummer work for you. If you listen to the solo you can hear the changes to the tune going by...

I think what hes doing here is to showcase how to practice with metronome on back beats. You can have either click on 1,2,3,4; 1 & 3 or 2 & 4, theres no golden rule which one is better as long as one can swing with it. Most great players such as Herbie, Keith or Jaco always stomp their feet on all 4 beats, or 1 &3, no one stomps on 2 & 4 to keep the time unless grooving on slow funk beat etc. Id never use click to practice solo improvisation, since the feel of time & phrasings come from body.

...Uhh, most of the pros do that. Tap on 2 and 4 I mean. My Berklee grad guitar prof, all of my colleagues, James Carter, Joe Pass, Miles Davis (when he moved at all)... Tapping on the 2 and 4 really does help you to swing more viscerally.

T.Williams even revolutionized to pedal all 4beats on Hi-Hat while old school pedaled HH on 2&4 and ride cymbal pronounced all 4 beats. I think it is pointless trying to teach how to swing, it is either you have it or not whether one may move or not at all. In any form of music, ONE is the most important beat! That's all you need to know then you're free:)

Joe Pass does seperate his count in that clip... Left foot on 1/3 and right on 2/4.
Even though nobody swings likes Oscar, I still think it's an overstatement to say that most great players stomp every beat. Tony Williams may have been able to get all 4 beats on the hi hat, but that does not erase the decades of drummers who did and still do accent the 2 & 4 on the hat. I and many others find it easier to accent the 2 and 4, but if you've got something that works for you then good.

It is natural to stomp on both feet if the tempo is fast, the same as 1,,2,3,4 using both feet to compensate the speed of tempo. With all due respect, I dont know where youve got the idea 2,4 is more important to swing? All beats are important, to know where one is and what the exact tempo is, so that u can divide them properly in order to swing or groove with proper phrasings using 3 as one beat which was derived from African Yoruba culture conceived all modern jazz and Afro American rhythm.

Well, to answer your question. The meter here is 4/4 time, however, the pulse in jazz is on 2&4. Accept it. That's just the way it is. If you're not pulsing on 2&4, then you're not swinging. Pat clearly demonstrates that here.

Ive already mentioned that rhythmic origin of jazz is from Yoruba, which is beat of 12/8, every 4th beat is accented and thats the origin of 2,4 accenting in 4/4. However, attempting to explain swing from this nature is misleading. No matter what, you always need to know where one is in any tempo to develop meaningful phrasing in any meter of music. Swing is a feel of particular music language whether in 4/4, 11/4 or whatever. It is not a mechanical process to understand it using metronome.

Uhm, well yeah. The 1 is important. That's kind of a given. I don't really think it's worth arguing with you, because if you listen to jazz then you know that the accents lie on the 2 and 4. Counting on the 2 and 4 does not give you an innate sense of rhythm or swing, but nobody said it does. It just makes it easier to hang on to the feel. Try it.

I agree, this has been exhausted in this forum and it's not worth arguing. Clearly if you know where two is, then you know where one is. It will free you up if you count 2&4, rather than counting 1234. That becomes exhausting, and you won't develop the rhythmic pulse counting 1234.

Good call... I forgot about that. If you're playing a quick bop chart (like 240 bpm) it's tough to stomp four on the floor. You look spastic, lost time, and it can be distracting for observers

I saw him do this clinic. This might actually be the event I went to; hard to say, but he does recommend practicing with metronome.
