I am not criticizing Fischer-Dieskau's performance in any way just the general interpretation of this cycle. To us non Germans whose knowledge of German is sketchy this cycle sounds like a disillusioned old man's progress to death which the organ grinder,as death's messenger supplies. It isn't. It's message is life is for living! This was the last song I recorded with my husband before he died. He and I knew he would die and I had to get on with it. I thought my life was over but I live on!

I am truly sorry for your loss, but I tend to disagree with your interpretation. To me (a German) "die Winterreise" is a tale of a man, who wanders through an imaginary winter scenery, which reflects his emotions. Whether he chooses to live or die is left open, still the main theme of the Winterreise is time and the sad fact that nothing lasts forever. However, that's just how I see it and music is such a great thing - you should always be able to get some kind of catharsis out of it!

Thanks a lot for the posting. It's worth listening to DFD's version from his youth - check out his b/w video from the 50's. Unfortunately not a good sound recording but his voice is superb. Also Th. Qualsthoff is great in this song.

I think Herr. Fischer-Dieskau must be the greatest German singer of classic music of our age. His voice is perfect for the style of music and reflects the emotions shown in the piece. Es lebe Fischer-Dieskau.

Superb. Brilliantly sung. So much expression. So much emotion. Although I prefer the "Der Leiermann" lied, this one carries as much intensity as the rest of the "Die Winterreise" cycle.
I am curious: How does one pronounce "Dieskau"? Like "Dees-co"?

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore have set the standard against which every student learns, and to which every performance is compared. It is an astonishingly high standard indeed, and in my humble personal opinion, one which has not been surpassed. The Brendel accompaniment has a subtly different effect from Moore's. The effect seems to be more explicit in the song's emotional expression, in contrast with Moore's subtlety. Personally, I prefer the Moore version.
