Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes

Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes provides a riveting examination of manhood, sexism, and homophobia in hip-hop culture. Director Byron Hurt, former star college quarterback, longtime hip-hop fan, and gender violence prevention educator, conceived the documentary as a "loving critique" of a number of disturbing trends in the world of rap music. He pays tribute to hip-hop while challenging the rap music industry to take responsibility for glamorizing destructive, deeply conservative stereotypes of manhood. The documentary features revealing interviews about masculinity and sexism with rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Jadakiss, and Busta Rhymes, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, and cultural commentators such as Michael Eric Dyson and Beverly Guy-Shetfall. Critically acclaimed for its fearless engagement with issues of race, gender violence, and the corporate exploitation of youth culture.

everyone has a voice to say what they want....its too bad that those out there that have conscious lyrics or try talk about actual issues or even just stories(mos def, common, the roots, or even dead prez) arnt in the public eye...and its way easier for radio and media to glorify the ones who build up the persona of being like a new age scareface rapping about guns and drugs...entertainment sells just like movies and people eat it up...some like that music but by now its just commercialized

Thanks in advance. Stay cool and stay positive. People back up the violent, woman degrading stuff THAT'S why it stays out there. If more people back up the more positive meaningful stuff, it will be strong as well.

Honestly, I think many people feel that African Americans are "homophobic" because they do not promote or support it when it really is just a cultural clash. Im not saying their were not Africans who had same-gender attractions but for the most part the behavior was not a norm within African societies. Living in a society with Europeans (who support such behavior) has rubbed off on alot of African Americans. I dont understand y people expect us to support such peverted behavior. It IS a choice!
