Interesting, he jokes about how little 12 million is - now it would pay for the catering - I wonder if it crossed his mind that it would save thousands of lives in third world countries! Yeah, Google, very funny.
Some other points. ... ( 4 months ago by therealdavidlightman)
Some other points. What got me into hacking was something that appeared on "60 Minutes," believe it or not. And the movie that inspired me was NOT any of those mentioned during the panel. Finally, the book that served as my true inspiration for all things hacking wasn't even mentioned. I'll be discussing all of this during my DEFCON fireside chat.
What all three ... ( 4 months ago by therealdavidlightman)
What all three panelists totally missed was the role of hacking by intelligence agencies and organized crime circa 2008. This is the most significant change from the days of the lone hacker. Also, the original screenplay was MUCH BETTER than the movie. Hackers would appreciate the original screenplay; much more hacking, most of it real.
2) Although the ... ( 4 months ago by therealdavidlightman)
2) Although the title wasa indeed "The Genius," remember that a "genius" is one out of 50 people. Probably applies to just about everyone attending DEFCON!! 3) However, Walter claimed that most Googlers could be David Lightman. He's dead wrong. There's an element to David Lightman in every Googler, but fundamentally David Lightman's MO is hacking, especially when it comes to AI meets hacking (e.g., malicious intelligent agents, artificial immune systems for network intrusion detection).
Some brief ... ( 4 months ago by therealdavidlightman)
Some brief responses to some comments made by Walter: 1) The space warfare theme that was originally tossed around in Q1 '79 was my idea and he ridiculed it during the panel. In fact, I felt that the idea of breaking into the Blue Cube wasn't such a big deal. Also, space warfare became a hot topic in the late 70's, so it was much more timely then than it is now.

I'll be adding a different and expanded perspective on WarGames at the upcoming DEFCON. See the DEFCON d-t org home page regarding the 25th anniversary screening of WarGames for more info and my fireside chat with the Dark Tangent. BTW, also see the forthcoming August (2008) issue of Wired. I'm noted by the lead author of a retro feature on WarGames as "the model for David Lightman." Scott (the lead author) is mentioned by both Larry or Walter (or both) during this panel at Google.
