whats the big deal? they have to do something, sites like youtube have a huge impact on bandwith and this is only set to increase. remember they are a business, a capitalist business in a free market, it is their right. if you want completely free internet, set up your own isp, then you deal with the costs of terabytes per day.

um, so basically if youtube wants to provide better service by laying additional wire, they have to ship everyone's traffic over their cables? net neutrality means everyone gets mediocre quality for a mediocre price. A non-neutral net would mean you have the option of paying more for better service. Tell me where I'm wrong.

It's a very good point that you're making. And really, there's no flaw in your argument.
However, the thing that's wrong with the privatized version is that the companies would be able to completely censor everything on their private pipeline as they see fit. If it were just laying more lines so people could have access to faster net service, this would be a non-issue, but the problem
lies in the fact that the companies that pay for privatized service get to dictate what else is on there.

Hang on, so the companies own the pipes, right? But you're saying it's wrong for someone to choose how they use something that they own? To be honest, trying to stop the cable companies doing what they want with their pipes is a much greater threat to democracy than what the cable companies want to do. It's a dangerous precedent to set to say that the government should be able to dictate what people do with their private property.

Most power-party politicians support the restriction of information. Bi-partisan rhetoric like yours, shaggyjam, demonstrates an ignorance to both the republican AND democratic bureaucratic machinations that undermine freedom in the United States damages the movement to support freedom of information. There is an independent liberal-progressive movement that supports these freedoms. They are the friends, corporate and dominant political political powers are the enemies.

It's not unfair, we already pay the companies to use a certain speed of internet (1Mb DSL vs. 20Mb fiber). On the other end, content providers are paying for what they use too. What these companies want is to make it so that they can restrict what kind of traffic goes through the bandwidth that we've already paid for. In other words, even if you pay for 20Mb/s cable, depending on what website you visit, you might be restricted to 1Mb/s if that website can't afford the "big pipe".

They own the pipes, but they don't own the content that is transferred over those pipes. Therefore they don't have the right to regulate the speed with which the content should be transferred over their pipes. They let me rent their pipe, but i can determine myself what i want to transfer over their pipe.
