I think Bullitt (1968) gots the best car chase scene of any movie handsdown. But this one is just fucking good.

The engine sounds for the Mustang in Bullitt was from a Ford GT40. They have a nice write up in wikipedia about Bulllitt. No matter what Bill Hickman was one hell of a driver. I have never seen car control in a movie as good as his.

If you look closely towards the end after the hood of the Ventura gets blown off you'll see when he steps on it and you see the engine that it has a Chevy style air filter housing. Not sure if there was a Chevy engine under it but it is a chevy housing as Pontiacs were flat. I have owned a few old pontiacs of that vintage.

I used to ask people in the 80's and 90's if they ever saw the Seven-Ups. Only about 5% knew what I was talking about. I saw this when it first came out. It was at a drive-in (remember those?) right across the street from my apt., and I saw it every night it played. Had an unobstructed view. It played on a double-bill with CHarles Bronson's "The Stone Killer"

Just curious. How is it possible you saw this
movie when it first came out if you're only 28?
The movie was released in 1973- 35 years ago.

Hickman was in French Connection too, not only did he drive for Hackman in the chase, but he played the FBI agent Popeye shoots accidentally at the end of the film. And he was the Charger driver in Bullit.

I've always wondered about that too! It always seemed like the locations didn't match up to where they were going.

My Aunt still has a big 4door green 1972 455 powered Bonneville... and based on the gas mileage those things get, I'm thinking if Roy could have hung on maybe 2 or 3 more minutes, the full sized Pontiac would have run out of gas!
Wotta car chase! ...( 1 month ago by odiemodie1)
Wotta car chase! They did everything FOR REAL back then. Not because they didn't have "playing it safe" CGI, but because that's how it is done! Real cars, real action, real actors, real filming, real guts!

And that big ol' yacht, that Bonniville, Ho,ho! ain't NO WAY that wimpy police roadblock's gonna stop that behema flying like a bat out of heck @ 6:44! Scary high speeds! The Ventura looks like it was gonna at times skid-float right off the road! Thanks, Bill! Bless you always, Roy! We will miss you!

Wow! A very rarely seen gem (in the UK anyway)
Great to see Bill Hickman at his very best and Rod giving it "Shit, that was close" rather than De Niro's rather puzzling expressions in Ronin - he was holding the wheel in that like you'd try to grab a wet dog..
Anyhoo, have to spread the word about this chase. Cheers Mr 544!!

Such a great movie but it always seems to be let off everyone's list for car chases. Then again the Pontiac Roy is driving really wasn't that desirable of a car then.
