wow, i was being a troll, and this is still more silly than my original comment! Don't know about just jazz... sure jazz is available for everyone, but there is a language. Don't disregard it. He does use melodic minor... Also... my serious thought on this... his solo is v competent and tasty sounding... but it lacks a bit of taste... its not aware of the tune.. but then after that farce of a scat what can you expect...

lol. well I think all we have here is two performers coming from two different backgrounds. GBenson is a guitarist above all else, so he's singing all his guitar lines...but with his voice. Scott is singing things she just hears in her head. they are both great just George has stronger harmonic id

By 'tasty sounding but it lacks taste', i mean its slick and functional... but its a perversion of the song.. and i don't think jazz is about ignoring the composition and then soloing on the changes.. what george benson is doing is scatting. what jill scott is doing.. fuck knows.. shes a great singer but this is not scat

He isn't ignoring the composition in my opinion. In fact listen carefully from 2.05 to 2.20, and I'm pretty sure the majority of his ideas are coming directly from the songs melody at that point in the changes.
And arguably they are both scatting, just her vocabulary is very blues/soul and his language is very bebop, which is understandable given their musical identities. I'm promise not being contrary either, I think your opinion is as valid as mine...

Wow what a stupid idiot you are, and obviously don't know what real singers are. Possibly are white, and this reminds you of the days when black folks sung about their trials and tribulations at the hands of your ancestors? or is this the essence of real black singers, singing the down home country songs? Whatever it is stop hating idiot, because this is a vocal range you could never have, and a type of music only black people like these 2 artists can deliver! Get over it!

It has nothing to do with being white. Jill Scott is a pop singer who occasionally chooses to sing jazz. Listen to Ella or Carmen Mcrae - those are strong black women and REAL jazz singers. Jill Scott is the opposite of both of those women to me. She over-sings most notes and throws her voice around. Excuse me for voicing my opinion and in a mildly articulate, non-flaming manner that had absolutely nothing to do with racism. Take a look at yourself and stop accusing other people.

It's obvious she admires Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Minnie Ripperton, ETC. She knows her stuff. What's she suppose to do? Transport back in time to the forties, so you can deem her legitimate. Jill Scott is a very very good live. If you want to bitch about current music, at least pick someone who deserves it.
