I wonder if Sam Windom's steel guitar influenced current steel guitarist Robert Randolph? It sounds an awful lot like it.

I believe that Sam Windom died before Robert Randolph was born. More likely Randolph learned his stuff in church. Nowadays he seems to have discovered 1960s rock guitar heroes. It's funny to hear church ensembles sound like garage bands (check out, for example, the wedding services performed by Mother Bynum). Only in America.

i tell you, it was like nothing i ever seen, i saw the very first "gospel train" that gertrude ward presented in 1957! it was out of this world, obviously all the groups were trying to out-perform the others, child they carried on like you would not believe! GOSPEL was at its peak during that time, the 50s was definitely the best decade.

Charles Taylor also had some very gifted singers.Back in those days before you could record any type of playing or singing you had to show you had talent, otherwise you weren't allowed.Nowadays anyone, even without talent could record;all you need is money.I think it's sad.

Yes, indedy! Charles Taylor and his singers were great. I'm actually going to be a part of Gospel Music Tribute in a couple of weeks, where Charles Taylor will be honored, as well as other people.

Thanks for posting this historical recording. The original lineup here was never duplicated (Marion Williams holding those out-of-this world notes in the backgroup) but the Ward Singers maintained 'til the end a force and energy few could compare with.
