I have flown on the ... ( 4 days ago by faosfx)
I have flown on the Challenger 604 and I can assure you that if we have an engine go out or loose it, we will know immediately. It will be indicated on the EICAS or we will not see any information shown for that engine. Corrective procedures are then taken immediately. I was trained to never attempt to go around with a lost engine to try and land the aircraft, straight ahead is your only option.
This only applies ... ( 4 days ago by faosfx)
This only applies for take offs if V1 is within limits. However, if you loose an engine on approach, you just trim for it and descent at steeper profile. BUT, you are right...the maintenance team should have seen this, clearly the engine was loose and this they could not have seen. Pilots don't usually have time to look around the plane often to see if all is ok, they can only rely on the maintenance team to do their job.
When you come in ... ( 4 days ago by faosfx)
When you come in for a flight, you have to review all these papers about weather, do a briefing on the flight, how much fuel you will need, etc and then you have to go into the cockpit and configure the plane and wait for the rest of the papers to come in. Some things we can't see...for example the 747-400 has a locking pin on the landing gear...how do we know this was removed? We can only trust the airline staff to make sure they did...so yeah, its an awsome job but it comes with risks...

Not only to the pilots but to the passengers on board as well. The MD-11 is a beautiful aircraft but it was plagued with defects & terrible accidents.

After V1 speed, the ... ( 3 days ago by jsmc11)
After V1 speed, the crew is committed to takeoff, no matter what the situation. They will deal with the problem in the air. In this case there is no way they could have known of the grave nature of the situation. They could not see that engine #1 had fallen off the plane, taking a small part of the wing, ripping the hydraulic lines, and also cutting off the power to warning systems in the cockpit. They followed procedure, but because of a sequence of events that were unexpected, they crashed.
Can't an aircraft ... ( 3 days ago by iDunnoUsername)
Can't an aircraft fly with just 1 engine (or in this case 2 engines) while having an engine failure or an engine ripped off? Is it because of those hydraulic fluid spilling out that made them unable to fly it? I'm curious =/

What I can't understand is how they weren't able to keep it flying with two other engines.
The left wing ... ( 23 hours ago by rookie314)
The left wing leading edge devices retracted due to lack of hydraulic locks on the actuators that move them. The crew det the aircraft up in the normal one engine out configuration. Because of the retracted slats the aircraft climb speed was 6 knots slower than the stall speed for the wing with the devices retracted. The left wing stalled and in rolled into the ground. The number of engines operating had no effect on the outcome of the crash.

Incorrect ... ( 20 hours ago by ShmeareD)
Incorrect maintenance practice due to the tight ass airlines cutting back on maintenance staff and doing maintenance over seas at some pox assed little shit hole of a country that cost a hell of a lot less. Rumor has it that Qantas are now doing all there maintenance at an Indian call center.....Fuck em all i say and do it by boat or car or bike...last resort hike...! Fuck planes!
