How to Make a Foxhole Radio

Uploaded by: makemagazine
Video Description:
During World War II, GIs in the field built really amazing simple radios to listen too. These were made with materials that they could get their hands on and were small enough to carry around in a big pocket. You can modify this design if you want to set it up so that it's tuneable too! To see all the plans, go to makezine dot com slash podcast!

Yes you need a crystal ear piece, the reason is that because there are no batteries and it's powered by RF (radio waves) there simply isn't enough power to drive a speaker in a pair of normal headphones

My father made this radio in WW2 in the Netherlands. The Germans forbade people to have radio's. This one did not need power and he could use the line that his smother used to dry clothes with as a antenna. There were broadcasts from England especially for people in Holland to help them keep up the spirits and remember that help was on the way.

Hey dude, question, why didn't you use a germainum diode for the detector?? Back in 1987 I used two toilet papertube in parallel, and was successful in receiving shortwave!!! I conected it all up to a small audio amp. BBC,mecexico, and radio amsterdam. all with a dieode dectector and and audion amp.I tapped one coil for a small amout of selectivity

i was wondering, ... ( 1 day ago by marcotmcom)
i was wondering, since there is an electrical current here that goes to the earpeace, could it be possible to use that electricity for something else than the earphone like charging a battery? I realize that it is a very low current, but lets say i make 25 of these radios with antennas, put them in an box and and connect their output in series, that would make a bigger current. powering something bigger like a real loudspeaker or an electronic alarm clock or a computer keyboard.
