If by owned you mean "lost by referee and then cold-war fueled protest voting," then I agree. The only thing that can be said for certain about this game is that it was close - the officiating was highly suspect (the Russians got to play those last seconds three times), and the final decision came to a jury of three Eastern Bloc supporters and two Western ones. No-one can say for sure that the US should have won, but it's impossible to deny the possibility, and perhaps even likelihood.

No, usa didnt play the game they were good at, and thats why they lost, if usa desrved to win then they should have been leading the game by at least 10 points, last 3 seconds were left and had to be played and americans just lost focus for the game, if they wanted to win they would have won if they got back on defense for those 3 seconds. Americans opened up giving russians the advantage to win the game. So usa basketball team should blame themselfs.

Yet you must admit that if you let two teams play each other enough times, eventually the team that is "better" will lose, just by pure chance and human error. The fact that the game was close only suggests that the teams were fairly evenly matched, not that the US wasn't playing hard. It was a close game. But the Russians weren't winning when time ran out, twice. The question is whether the random chance caused the US to succeed twice, or fail once, and it's clear where the odds lie there.

And with all the confusion going on out on the court, it's easy to see how both teams were distracted and disorganized, leaving them open to influences that have nothing to do with basketball - it was a set of extraordinary circumstances that makes taking judgement of EITHER team from the outcome impossible, unless you want to say who was luckier, or who had the most officials on their side.

"better team lose", hahaha your joking, the referees heard an early horn which disrupteb the score table, they decided to replay the 3 minutes, while the ball was in play the scoreboard was in the process of being reset and the remaining second didn't count, the refs warned the players that the game was over yet there was 3 seconds left and all americans had to do was waste the time so the soviets would not win, but the us team was so sure that they the winners they lost focus on the game

Get your facts straight, it was three seconds, not three minutes. The Americans didn't have possession of the ball, so they couldn't waste time like you said. The decision to keep playing was made not by a referree, but by R. William Jones, Sec. General of FIBA, who had no real authority to do so. None of the three endings of this game were untainted, even the two that the US won. I don't know who should have won, but as things stand, it's not the fault of the US that they didn't.

Okay, boys: neutral position here. The same time out the USSR had, (and should not have had,) was the same time out the US had to set up a defense. They got to tied up in fighting the officials, and when you compete against the refs, you lose! A real champion is one that can overcome adversities, like those bull@#$*& calls, and still win. Just ask the Seattle Seahawks: they did not lose that superbowl, they beat themselves.

i always think of it this way, they may of beat us then by one, but we beat there asses 8year later in the 1980 winter olympics 4-3 for the first time in 20 years.
