Speaking of the Mars Volta, I noticed that this song shares a very similar line to one in Pattern Against User by At The Drive In. Who would've thought?

The name of your band shouldn't be completely arbitrary or (in this case) pretentious; it should reflect the scope and artistic intent of the music. There are such things as decent groups with completely lame names - Return to Forever is one of them.

It's a sci-fi name and Chick was into sci-fi. what's the prob? It's not arbitrary or pretentious. What are they pretending to be? A great jazz fusion band?

A truly great band wouldn't bring an element of indulgence and kitsch to their music like that.
You can say that ... ( 1 week ago by Filmstripman)
You can say that about any band. Just pick one, and you can find a way to make it sound self indulgent. You don't think Michael Jackson or David Bowie have any elements of self-indulgence or kitsch in their music?
Well, obviously. ... ( 6 days ago by levanyzzuf)
Well, obviously. Most of Bowie's music post-Lodger is pure kitsch and MJ flirted with at times. But if you listen to Romantic Warrior, Chick Corea just dishes out out a lot of pompous, ersatz-classical compositions. The sci-fi element just underscores the emptiness of it all.
