You know, I think I agree with you! Just every now and then, when I get that sensation of pain while listening to Debussy, I feel like he's my favorite... but I never cease to be amazed by Maurice Ravel!
Only time will tell who ends up stealing my heart for good ;)

err i dun quite agree, i feel that Debussy's pieces are of more mysterious nature than Ravel. Ravel is easier to read.

Well, I would consider this to be one of Ravel's easier to read "show pieces", while the bulk of his work has much compositional integrity. Just like the "souveniers" by Barber don't contain all the interest of his other works. And I agree, Debussy is more mysterious, but he lacks one thing: forte

I'm sorry but music is not dependent on study with the composer, who may not even be a very good teacher.Ravel must hav been a dreadful teacher if the example of Perlemuter is given:fumbling,confused,shallow,garish.. Must we not play any music which we've not studied with its composer?
Surely one of the joys of different styles is in finding the fresh & unpredjudiced viewpoint of"exotic"artits; Alicia in Brahms,Cherkassky in Stockhausen(!),Gieseking in Rachmaninoff...Better no straitjackets!

This is not quite the best Richter could do with this piece, fine tho it is in some ways. It seems a bit studio-bound & dry. His live recording from Prague,(on a typically hilariously faulty Petrof)has, for my ears far more sparkle & verve.Richter is, in any case fartoo large a subject to dismiss, or to idolise. He was very uneven in quality,(sublime to ridiculous),and very contradictory in utterance, musical & verbal.

Great performance by Richter. Agreed, I think he could do even better than this particular performance.

Vlado Who? I'm ...( 1 week ago by yMew88)
Vlado Who? I'm sorry but Mr Perlemuter was a rather mediocre pianist and even more mediocre a musician. It is not even that important with whom he studied. There are qualities of heart and mind which one needs in order to play music well; theye can't be imparted by the best teacher in the world. Richter - not G-d but MAN played this piece with both lyricism and dry irony as behooves its sub-title and without a quasi-Spanish "coleur" so in demand with some.
